New Israel Ground and Interface Forces

Designer Note: NI Ground Forces were developed by John Atkinson, who has my sincerest thanks. I've altered the names of some of his equipment to match Brigade Models' SemFed (now relaunched under many different names) mini line. I use the former SemFed starship line for the New Israel Navy. I am not a DirtSide or StarGrunt Player, so feedback from the DS'ers and SG'ers could only serve to improve this section.

Ground Forces

Given IDF heritage and manpower resources, the basic maneuver element will remain the Armored Chativah (Brigade), which will be grouped to gether under the command of senior officers in ad hoc Ugdah (Divisions).  H owever, the lessons of 1973 and 1982 have been learned, and these are integrated all-arms formations, not just tanks running around on their lonesome like Sagge rs weren't invented. Typically an Ugdah would consist of 2-4 Armored Chativah, 1-2 Recon-Strike Chativah, and 1-2 Deep Battle Chativah. Most units are fairly modular, and can be plugged into ad hoc formations whenever necessary. For inst ance, a reserve unit being mobilized hastily may form up platoons and feed them directly to the front line, where officers gather up company-sized task forces a nd throw them into battle to plug gaps where needed. NIDF officers are mostly s elected on the basis of reacting to unforseen circumstances and thinking on thei r feet, as well as the ability to improvise on the fly.

The Lahav class MBT reflects New Israeli doctrine and 230 years of armored combat experience.  Introduced into line service in 2178, it  equipped all frontline and most reserve units by 2183.  The Lahav class of tank represents the state of the art armored fighting vehicle.  The 100mm Mass Dr iver Cannon provides the optimum combination of range and punch, without the sacrifices inherent in the HEL (poor punch) or DFFG (poor range).  The Lahav is also stealthed past the point of true cost-effectiveness, demonstrating New Israel's sensitivity to casualties.  Conventional reactive armor was selected due to the the wide proliferation of GMS systems among Islamic Federation forces and the relative scarcity of HELs other than in IF elite units.

The Haifa class light tank is used in recon units for additional firepower. Not intended to stand up to main battle tanks, it has nonetheless performed we ll even in this role.

The Hanit class APC also ideally reflects New Israeli doctrine.  NI tanks are the heart of their combined arms force, and the infantry is intended to protect the armor from enemy infantry, especially that operating in small hunter-killer teams in close terrain (mountains and cities, etc.)  It has the armor and electronics to follow the tanks into combat, and has the capacity for the large 12-man squads that New Israel prefers over the more typical 8-man squads. A common variant encountered carries a RAM mortar and stowage for five fire missions. The most common NIDF ADV also uses the APC, minus the ECM, the Stealth, and the MDC, and plus an Enhanced ADS. Forward Observers also use the Hanit refitted with target designation equipment and a dismounted FIST team. The Hanit has also been put into service as a mount for counter-battery radars.

The Scout refit for the Hanit APC is a class unique to New Israel.  It began life as a stock APC assigned to a recon slot with only a 4-man scout team instead of a full squad.  The recon troopers tended to 'acquire' a variety of weapons and field-modify their vehicles to provide more firepower in their exposed position due to their role. In 2181 the General Staff authorized the above variant as the most useful of the field modifications, and it has been more or less standardized. Since that time it has also been adapted as a platoon command and fire support vehicle.

The NIDF uses a fairly standard design of 155mm RAM howitzer, essentially the same one used universally with minor differences in chassis.

As in all armies, the NIDF's Combat Engineers are the red-headed stepchildren of the combat arms. Unlike some, this doesn't prevent them from receiving quality equipment. The Onager class CEV is a rebuilt Arieh-class MBT. The Main Gun has been replaced with a smaller weapon to make room for the specialized equipment. It has also been provided with a low-velocity setting and special rounds which provide it with a certain amount of demolition capacity--with modern explosives, a 90mm mass driver can lob an explosive round with the demolitions capacity of the old 165mm demo guns of the late 20th century. This is the occasion of much debate within the engineer branches of numerous armies. The NRE has decided to use a specialized demolition gun with even greater capabilities, but the NIDF engineers insist that the self-defense capability of the modified mass driver is more vital to their survival on the modern battlefield. The PDS has been removed to make room for a sophisticated sensor suite
